Welcome to the West Midlands Clinical Senate

The West Midlands is one of eight regional Clinical Senates.

Clinical Senates act as a source of clinical leadership and impartial clinical advice to support commissioners and other stakeholders to make the best decisions about health care for their populations. Clinical Senates' advice may be provided to, or be of relevance to, a number of different bodies within the NHS and care system, including Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), local government, providers, commissioners, improvement bodies, and regulators.

Combining expert clinical leaders with patient involvement, we provide proactive and reactive advice across the health care system for the benefit of improved patient outcomes and population health.

About us

The West Midlands Clinical Senate covers the following ICSs:

  • Birmingham and Solihull
  • Black Country
  • Coventry and Warwickshire
  • Herefordshire and Worcestershire
  • Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin
  • Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent

Clinical leadership is at the heart of the NHS commissioning system. Working with expert clinical leaders and patients, we provide advice and leadership on how services should be designed to provide the best overall care across the healthcare system to improve patient outcomes and population health.

By harnessing the collective expertise and intelligence across the region we will position the Clinical Senate as a valued independent body in the new commissioning landscape and bring a renewed professional focus to the challenges facing health communities.

Our offer as a Clinical Senate is to:

  • Provide evidence based clinical advice, act as an honest broker and, if required, undertake reviews to areas where there may be a lack of consensus in the local health system.
  • Provide independent clinical advice to commissioners in respect of major service change programmes, to inform the NHS England service change assurance process.
  • Work with stakeholders to identify aspects of health care where there is potential to improve outcomes and value. Provide proactive advice about the areas for inquiry or collaboration, and the areas for further analysis of current evidence and practice.

Our Clinical Senate Chair is Professor Neil Gittoes and our Vice Chair is Dr Will Taylor.

The Head of the East and West Midlands Clinical Senates is Emma Orrock. Please go to the Contact Us page to get in touch.
